Overview of Back & Spine Conditions

If you have recurring back pain, you are not alone. Over 80% of people in the United States will suffer from some form of back pain, with lower (lumbar) back pain being the most common. For many, an acute pain problem becomes chronic. Too often, the treatment focuses on the pain and not the underlying cause.

The spine is a wonder of nature, but there are scores of medical conditions that can affect it. This is not a surprise when you consider the spine’s complexity. There are 24 vertebrae which are each separated by intervertebral discs that serve as shock absorbers.

The spine consists of three major sections. The top seven vertebrae comprise the cervical area, which supports the head and neck. The thoracic section consists of twelve vertebrae which support the ribs and chest. The lumbar curve is composed of five vertebrae which are denser to support the body’s weight. Each of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae have two pairs of synovial joints or facet joints which provide flexibility to the spine. Within the vertebral column, there is a spinal canal where the all-important spinal cord is protected.

The lower vertebrae connect to the sacrum and coccyx, and form the important juncture at the sacroiliac joint where it connects to the pelvis.

When you add them up, there are over 150 components in your spine that can fail, not including connective tissues, ligaments, tendons, nerves, muscles, veins and the spinal cord. If one part malfunctions, you will feel it, sometimes immediately, sometimes gradually and at times only as a referred pain, as in sciatica. Many of the problems of the back and spine are classed as degenerative, often relating to some form of arthritis. Dr. Scott Greenberg has created Kinetic Regeneration Therapy to treat a broad spectrum of medical conditions, including frequently misdiagnosed back and spine complaints.

No matter what kind of back pain you are experiencing, Dr. Greenberg can help. He has been treating people with back problems for over twenty years and had the distinct honor of treating Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, MD. He is often seen by patients who have tried numerous treatments for back pain but never found lasting relief. That is until they were treated with regenerative treatments by Dr. Greenberg’s team.

The Greenberg Method (TGM) is an alternative treatment paradigm that initiates natural healing processes, factors and cells in your body to stabilize, regenerate and strengthen injured musculoskeletal systems. TGM treatments are as minimally invasive as a blood draw and an injection. Dr. Greenberg will discuss the features of each procedure and explain the therapeutic options that are most appropriate for your case. The objectives of the treatments are to enable your body to heal itself, to regenerate where there is a degeneration and address issues that are often missed in most people who have chronic spine issues.

Dr. Greenberg and his team regularly treat patients suffering from bulging, herniated and collapsed discs, sciatica pain, piriformis syndrome pain, sacroiliac joint pain, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, slipped discs, pelvic tilt and many other conditions.

Back and spine regeneration starts with Comprehensive Kinetic Diagnosis. Dr. Scott Greenberg and his team will review your medical history, pertinent radiographic studies such as X-rays and MRIs, and they will perform a hands-on examination of your sore spine and all areas related to it. They will examine the sacrum, test for a balanced pelvis, check for leg length differences even a collapsed foot arch. Every part of the body’s musculoskeletal system can hold a clue that will lead the team to find the root cause for your back problem. Once they find it, they will create a treatment roadmap that will resolve the core kinetic problem, and alleviate many of your symptoms.

Dr. Greenberg may recommend The Greenberg Method (TGM) which is a comprehensive non-surgical approach that seeks to repair any damaged soft tissues such as capsular ligaments along your spine or repair a fallen arch that is twisting the spine. The Greenberg Method helps bring the body back into balance. It includes Prolotherapy, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell Treatments. Dr. Greenberg may suggest one or a combination of the three. All three treatment modalities are excellent alternatives to pain management or surgery.

Dr. Scott Greenberg is a pioneering leader in prolotherapy, PRP, and stem cell procedures. He serves as the chair of the Institutional Review Board of the American Association of Stem Cell Physicians and is a founding board member. He was a member of the first team to repair a meniscus tear using stem cell therapy and has treated many professional and Olympic athletes among the thousands of people helped since starting his practice in 1999. He also has the distinction of being named Director of the Regenerative Medicine team at the Dee Adams Center for Integrative and Regenerative Medicine at the Bryn Mawr Hospital.
