The second most common reason to visit an Emergency Room in the US is the sprained ankle, accounting for 20% of visits with strains and sprains accounting for 75% of the cases involving ankles. You can sprain an ankle by landing at an angle and placing stress on the ligaments that support the joint. Another common cause is changing directions too sharply and overstressing your ligaments. During an ankle sprain, the three outside ligaments are usually damaged.

The ankle joint is the juncture of the tibia and fibula of the leg and the talus of the foot. The joint is tied together by two groups of ligaments that form a ring around the joint. The first is called the medial which has four ligaments; the second is the lateral with three ligaments. Despite all the supporting ligaments, the ankle is an exposed and highly stressed joint that is prone to injury.

  • Any swelling or puffiness at the ankle
  • Sharp pain
  • Failure to stand on the injured foot
  • Bruising around the ankle
  • Stiffness
  • Popping sound when injured

The long term success of Dr. Greenberg’s patients is attributed to a specialized approach to the examination process. Deemed “The Greenberg Method,” this diagnostic approach not only looks into the area of damage and pain, but also evaluates the mechanics and structure of the bone and joints related to the area of the pain. For instance, not only will we look at the area that is damaged in the ankle but we will look and see if there are any contributing factors such as pelvic tilt or a collapse of the arch that creates more strain on the ankle joint. In executing The Greenberg Method, Dr. Greenberg often discovers that conditions experienced in one area of the body are often rooted in a different area that hasn’t been treated before. While an isolated joint treatment ignores physiology and the evaluation of movement, The Greenberg Method’s full-body examination produces a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan. In return, the patient experiences a greater reduction in pain and improvement in function, which helps them get back on their feet to resume their daily routines, pain free.

Dr. Greenberg’s team will carefully review your medical history and perform The Greenberg Method, including a review of your most recent radiographs. They will carefully examine and palpate your ankle, calf, foot and knee to comprehensively understand why your ankle is so easily sprained.

If you are an appropriate candidate for The Greenberg Method, Dr. Greenberg will treat your ankle by recommending the healing and synergistic cascade of Prolotherapy, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell Treatments.

A typical treatment course may call for several injections performed every 3 weeks, depending on the patient’s progress. The treatments strengthen and renew sinews, ligaments, tendons, nerves and cartilage using the body’s own healing components to stabilize the joint in your ankle and feet. If we find additional areas that are causing pain during the procedures, we will try to fix those too.

For severely sprained ankles, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments have an excellent track record for effectiveness, and are administered about once every three weeks. PRP injections create a natural, healing cascade that regenerates bone structures, ligaments and cartilage. The treatments can eliminate crepitus (grinding) in your ankle.

The Greenberg Method is an excellent choice for people who are looking for a non-invasive alternative to surgery that has lower infection risks, shorter recovery times and is opioid-free. The Greenberg Method treats you holistically, renews you physically and seeks to rekindle a feeling of wellness so you become a healthier and happier YOU with ankles that don’t ache.
