My teenager may have an Osteochondral Defect (OCD) in her elbow. Can the disease be reversed?

Symptoms caused by an Osteochondral Defect (Osteochondritis Dissecans) can be alleviated in children and teens who rest the joint. They are often young enough to regrow bone and thus reverse the disease. The conservative consensus for treatment is joint immobilization and rest. OCD often attacks knees in addition to elbows.

There is no question that OCD is a very serious joint disorder. It causes cracks in the articular cartilage in the elbow joint and subchondral bone, which is the bone layer beneath the cartilage. The primary cause of OCD is blood deprivation to the bone layer that leads to avascular necrosis, or death of the bone. The loose articular cartilage is easily damaged when stressed by gymnastic routines. Bone fragments called bone lice will cause grinding in the joint. Loose fragments of bone may also cause inflammation and pain in the joint.

The first presentation of OCD may be the inability of the athlete to bend an elbow. The disease is progressive and is best confirmed by X-rays, CT and MRI scans.

Can bone structures and cartilage be regenerated without invasive surgery?

Dr. Greenberg’s team will perform a Comprehensive Kinetic Diagnosis of the elbow and assess other joints as well for OCD. They will carefully review the radiographic scans and physically examine and palpate your elbow, forearm, wrist and hand to assess your arm movement and understand the underlying kinetics of the disease.

Depending on the severity of the OCD injury and the stage of the disease, the team may suggest alternative therapies to strengthen the joint.
