What Is Spinal Stenosis?
Spinal Stenosis describes any closing of the neural foramen along the spine or narrowing along the spinal canal and nerve root canals.
The two types of spinal stenosis are acquired and developmental stenosis, which is caused by genetics. While stenosis cannot be inherited, researchers have found that some people’s genes may put them at a higher risk than others for developing stenosis. Being that this research is still ongoing, doctors cannot yet use this data to determine your potential risk. Acquired stenosis is more common and develops with age as the three-joint complex of the spine loses its strength and flexibility. As openings narrow, nerve and blood systems can be damaged, causing painful ischemic neuritis, or the sudden loss of vision due to lack of blood flow to the optic nerve. Generally, acquired stenosis appears after 70, and may affect over 250,000 Americans.
Common Symptoms
- Pain radiating from both legs
- Increased pain in the back, buttocks, and legs with standing or extensive walking
- Bladder issues may worsen with the condition
- In a physical examination, the lower spine may appear flattened
- Limited range of motion in the back
Patient’s Story: Arlene
Dr. Greenberg’s patient, Arlene, came into our office just a few months ago, accompanied by her husband and daughter. She was suffering with a condition known as spinal stenosis – a debilitating arthritic condition of the low back. Undoubtedly, life was difficult for Arlene, as she could not stand or walk for any significant period of time due to the severe aches and tightness in her lower back and legs.
Traditional methods of treatment and medications were not helping and a major surgery with fusion was recommended to her by other medical professionals.
After going through her full medical history, a physical examination, and review of her radiographic studies, Arlene and Dr. Greenberg decided that she would be a good candidate for our regenerative medicine treatments. Arlene’s treatment plan included a few rounds of prolotherapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP), and one autologous stem cell procedure to the spine.
Through this treatment plan, Dr. Greenberg was able to take pressure off of Arlene’s nerves, stabilize her spine, and rebalance the pelvis and sacrum.
Now, Dr. Greenberg is happy to report that her pain is gone; and once again, Arlene can enjoy life again without suffering through constant low back pain. She is able to go to her grandchildren’s sporting events, go out to dinner, spend time with her loved ones and so much more.
With that being said, changing someone’s life for the better is one of the most rewarding things we do here at Greenberg Regenerative Medicine.
